Is Aloe Vera Effective for Stretch Marks?

If you’re worried about your stretch marks, you’re not alone. Studies estimate that 80% of adults will have them. Stretch marks or striae are typically caused by the continual expansion and contraction of the skin due to excessive weight loss or weight gain. Ranging in color from light gray to purple, these textured bands are commonly found around the thighs, buttocks, stomach, breasts, and upper arms.

Although stretch marks are not a sign of a health problem, their appearance can negatively impact one’s confidence and self-esteem. Every year, thousands of people undergo laser treatments to lighten or minimize the appearance of their stretch marks. Some people also opt for natural remedies that can achieve the same result, albeit less immediate. One of these remedies is aloe vera.

If you’re wondering whether aloe vera is effective for your stretch marks, here’s everything you need to know.

Can Aloe Vera Treat Stretch Marks?

Due to its hydrating and healing properties, aloe vera gel is a popular ingredient in skincare products such as soaps, moisturizers, and face creams. As of this writing, there’s no scientific evidence to prove that aloe vera alone can cure or remove stretch marks. However, aloe vera can help fade stretch marks due to the following properties:

  • Promotes collagen synthesis: Aloe vera gel contains compounds called gibberellin and glucomannan. Gibberellin is a growth hormone, while glucomannan is a mannose-rich polysaccharide. These two compounds stimulate growth factor receptors on the fibroblast, which consequently increases collagen production.
  • Protects against UV and gamma radiation: Sun exposure can darken stretch marks and make them stand out more. Topically applying aloe vera gel produces metallothionein, an antioxidant protein that helps eliminate hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals are created when UV radiation breaks down ozone molecules. They’re particularly harmful to humans because they attack protein bonds and essential cell components.
  • Moisturizes the skin: Studies show that the topical application of moisturizers can significantly reduce the severity of stretch marks. Aloe vera gel contains mucopolysaccharides that bind moisture to the skin. The amino acids also help soften flaking or hardened epidermal cells.
  • Improves skin elasticity: Stretch marks can also appear when there’s an increase of cortisone—a hormone produced by the adrenal glands—in the body. Having too much cortisone in the body can result in a loss of skin elasticity. Aloe vera gel, as mentioned above, stimulates fibroblasts which also produce elastin fibers. This, in turn, makes the skin look younger and more elastic.

How to Use Aloe Vera for Stretch Marks

If you want to use aloe vera to help lighten your stretch marks, here are some great products that you can try:

  • Aloe vera gel: One of the easiest and most effective ways to use aloe vera is to apply the vera gel to the skin directly. Apply it on its own or mix it with some vitamin E capsules to soothe the skin. Massage the area for 5 minutes, and then just leave it on. For best results, apply twice a day.
  • Aloe vera mask: Aloe vera gel can also be mixed with other natural products to help fade your stretch marks faster. Mix two tablespoons of aloe gel with a teaspoon of cinnamon, diluted lemon juice, almond oil, or honey. Apply the paste evenly over the affected area and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse off with water. Repeat this at least twice a week.
  • Aloe vera scrub: Exfoliating promotes proper blood circulation, improves oxygen supply, and removes dead skin cells. There are a variety of aloe scrubs in the market for you to choose from. If you want to create your own, mix some aloe gel with natural exfoliating ingredients like ground coffee or granulated sugar. Massage it on the affected area for a few minutes, then let it sit for 20 minutes more before rinsing. Repeat every other day.
