What does “Organic” mean?
In this instance, ‘Organic’ means that Aloe Laboratories, Inc. has not only taken the time to grow its aloe plants in an organic-fashion by using no harsh chemicals or pesticides but has also made an effort to “certify” that organic claim to USDA national standards. If you are wondering where these standards are found, please see the following link: https://www.ams.usda.gov/about-ams/programs-offices/national-organic-program .
This means that we submit to annual audits from a USDA-approved certification body to ensure we are following the organic standards in managing our aloe farm to the manufacturing processes involved in making organic juices and powders. GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are prohibited in a USDA organic product and there is a list of acceptable ingredients that can be used in an organic product (found in the above link). Usually, a claim of a product (or ingredient) as being “organic” cannot be made unless it has gone through the USDA’s certification process. If it is a retail product, the name of the Certification Body should be listed on the label which will help one to verify the status of the manufacturer and certifier on the USDA website (Check the status of certified operations and certifiers).
It is important to note that even if other countries have an “organic program”, that standard may be very different from the USDA’s National Organic Program (particularly in what is allowed and what is prohibited in organic products). If you are unsure, ask an accredited certification body for help (such as Oregon Tilth Certified Organic, CCOF or others).
The Trials of making an Organic Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe Vera Juice by nature is sensitive to spoilage. To try to prevent this, most companies use a synthetic food preservative which works to prevent new bacteria from growing and spoiling the product. However, in an organic product, these synthetic food preservative ingredients are prohibited. Companies usually combat this by either diluting the aloe product trying to make it “less sensitive” or by using better packaging protection (like glass or custom multilayer plastic bottles) to limit oxidation and spoilage.
While this might make an organic product slightly more expensive, organics have been growing in popularity due to the absence of harsh pesticides, herbicides and other synthetics used in food production that could exacerbate one’s health.
Following the rule, “Be good to your body and it will be good to you”, we have endeavored to be transparent in our processes by allowing annual organic inspectors in to verify our following of the national standard. We have created a custom multilayered bottle to avoid safety issues associated with glass and avoid diluting an aloe juice so that our clients get the same strength found straight from an aloe leaf, as nature intended.
In light of this, we will be launching the “Organi” brand of organic aloe vera juices (Coming Soon). Organi is comprised of four certified organic aloe vera juices: Organi 99, aloe in its purest form, Organi Natural, Watermelon and Mango flavored which are lightly sweetened for those that do not like the pure aloe taste (it is not for everybody). Our philosophy is that, when people purchase an aloe product, it should be potent, free of any hidden chemicals, taste good and be economically priced.
